Backstory: Harriet's parents had died while she was very young, and she was left in the hands of her relatives. Her parents had been killed by a mass murderer who had had some insane idea about ruling the world. He had been killed while trying to kill her parents, which is why she survived. Harriet's relatives were abusive, locking her in her cupboard for long periods of time and sometimes refusing to feed her until she did all the work she was ordered to do. When they had received the invitation to St. Catherine's, her aunt and uncle had argued about it for ages. On one hand, they'd have to pay for their unwanted niece's schooling. On the other, the girl wouldn't be such a bother to them anymore, and who knows? Maybe being in a proper school would teach her to be less of a "freak." It didn't take them long to decide that sending her away would be the best thing to do.
